What Makes Church, church?

i am working on writing a blog on what a church really looks like.

i am concerned that some of the “church” movements of today while effective in seeing people saved are also failing in some of the primary duties of the body of Christ.

I’ll be out of pocket for the next few days but soon i hope to have this blog up.

i’d love to know your thoughts as i prepare to write this blog.

so… what makes church, “church”?

I think we , who are true believers in Jesus Christ are the Church. I think we should look like Jesus ,act like Jesus and Love like Jesus. SO often we fail, but I do pray that we continue to seek Jesus in reaching others for Him. I think we as a whole fail in so many ways . I believe if we seek Him and His Kingdom 1st, He will lead us to where people are that are desperate for God’s touch and God’s love. We should be looking past the outward appearance of others and into their hearts .Everyone wants to be loved and accepted unconditionally. Only Jesus is able to do that pefectly, but when we allow Him to control us we can show others something that the world can not offer. To me thats lacking in us all to different degrees. I do want to be more like Jesus and I pray I will seek Him and His plans above my own. Apart from Jesus Christ, we are nothing.

  3. matt chandler argues that two things are necessary to have a church: the faithful teaching of the Word, and the sacraments (communion and baptism). anything outside of this isn’t a church, but just a “rotary club”.

i actually taught on the church this past weekend at the Ohana church retreat for twin lakes: structural things, like biblical reasons for eldership, membership, and discipleship, and we also talked about the functions of the church (helping the poor, widows and orphans, the Great Comission), and then tradition vs. post modern appeal (what’s okay, what should be outlawed).

anyways, i think one of the best ideas of church would be in Hebrews 10:24-25. we need each other and the church needs everyone’s gifts to function like a well oiled machine (I cor 12-14).
